Keeping Preschoolers Safe

Prevention is the best medicine. Nowhere is this more true than in a preschool setting. As a professional working with very little children it is important that we see an accident waiting to happen, then make sure that it does not happen.

As the caregiver for preschoolers, part of your "job" is keeping them safe. Sometimes this is easier said than done. Let me give you a few pointers. There are plenty more out there. Let's take a look at some accidents that we can prevent.

FALLS: You can help prevent falls by making sure stuff is picked up. Juice, milk or water on a bare floor is easy to slip on. Use carpeting or rugs. If you have stairs in your preschool, use a gate to keep little ones out. If you have shelving in your preschool, you could attach it to the wall. If kids try to climb on them, they will not fall over. Outside, make sure equipment is age-appropriate and put down something soft for them to fall on like shredded rubber or mulch.

TOYS: Be sure that you are picking out age appropriate toys. Look on the box for the correct age for that toy. Make sure that toys are well constructed, do not have small pieces that could be choked on and have safe paint. Buy toys that are American-made and good name brands.

FIRE: The main thing here is to have smoke alarms with fresh batteries and fire extinguishers that you know how to use. Have a practice evacuation of the building, the children will love it. Explain that it was practice so they don't get upset.

CHOKING: Don't let children eat small, round or hard foods like small pieces of hot dogs, hard candy, nuts, grapes or popcorn. Keep small objects like small balls, buttons, beads, marbles, coins safe-guarded. Your children are probably old enough to handle these things but you should be aware and watch them closely if they are using or eating these types of items.

POISONS: Keep all chemicals and medicines in a locked cabinet, no exceptions. Install carbon monoxide detectors.

DROWNING: Children can drown in as little as one inch of water so watch them closely around any water. You might not have a pool but you might have standing water in a discovery table or during an art project or for cleaning with. If you do have a pool, have a fence around it with a locked gate.

BURNS AND SCALDING: Set your water heater to 120 degrees. A child's skin burns more quickly than an adult's so what feels OK to you may be too hot for a child. Cook on the back burners and turn pot handles away from the edge of the stove. Do not use a tablecloth, a child can pull it off and the hot food on top of it could land right on him.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY: All preschoolers must ride in the back seat of a car in their child safety seat with the seat belt. Never leave a child in a car unattended. You might want to take the bus when you go on a field trip. In our town, children 3-4 years ride free and the restraint rules do not apply in a bus.

CHILD PICK-UP: Never let someone pick-up a child that is not on your approved list for that child. Even better, take a picture of every approved adult.

You have probably taken your first aid and CPR training. Hopefully, you won't have to use them. But you can handle a crisis if needed with confidence. It is even better to prevent a crisis.

Have fun with your little ones. Keep them learning and keep them safe.

Sodium intake plays an important part in muscle growth, so make sure that you are getting enough. Sodium can enhance the way that your body stores carbohydrates and absorbs amino acids. High School Reunions, A Special Kind of Torture

High school reunions suck the fat one. Only a person who has never had to endure one would try to dispute this fact. I'm reminded of people who prattle on about how wonderful war is, but have never risked their neck in one.

Though it pains me to admit it, high school reunions are also useful in some ways. I won't so far as to say necessary, because when I say necessary I think of things like food, water, shelter, a functioning GI system. But let's be honest: it is pretty fun and interesting to see how everyone turned out.

I had good reason for wanting to dodge my high school reunion. Reasons, actually. Reason one, baldness. Never thought I'd be that sap whose bald, but fates a bastard, and here I am looking like some elongated cue ball. I'm also not successful. Not being super successful stinks. I'm not a screw up or anything, but everyone's got bold dreams in their youth. If I'd discovered the first living bigfoot or derived a unified theory or castrated Clinton, I still don't think I'd feel successful like I had attained enough success to justify attending my reunion.

Also, I'm kind of hoping to avoid the first three girls I screwed, when I was as awkward as an elephant on stilts.

And man I hate kids. Detest the little bastards. European kids I can handle, they are disciplined. American kids are spoiled f-ing brats. I almost need a pellet gun when I go out to eat these days to shut up all the rude brats I see. As I write this at the library, two kids are talking so loud they might as well be at a hockey game. Did not one explain the etiquette of a library to them? Were these ingrates simply released into the wild without any rearing whatsoever? Anyway, a third of a high school reunion is everyone talking about how great their kids are. Less than 1% do something great. Yet every parent tells you their kid is something special. I smell a dichotomy.

And who plans a high school reunion? Always the sort of sap who thinks they are actually cool. A sap, in other words. It is never someone cool, as they have better things to do. Thus the inherent tackiness which characterizes most high school reunions. Just once in human history, could some cool plan a high school reunion, and avoid the following pitfalls:

Classic music. A couple songs that were the rage in school is acceptable, but in general avoid the urge to play retro music. Avoid retro decorations too. Avoid yearbook pictures on nametags. Avoiding nametags would be even more ideal. High school reunions which work out well also have one paramount ingredient: plenty of cheap alcohol.

A Spotlight On Factors Of Coping With Chronic Stress

Stress is a natural response to immediate danger, so it's healthy under certain circumstances, but it's never good to be experiencing chronic stress. Basically, stress that occurs when there's no immediate threat to your well being that you can do something about is doing you more harm than good, which is why you should look for ways to get it under control. Below are some proven methods to manage chronic stress in your life

Think about your priorities and put them in order. Many people are natural worriers, even when there is no chance they can do anything about the situation they are worrying about. We tend to concentrate on so many things we want to change that we neglect to take care of ourselves.

You can relieve your stress - and protect your health - when you recognize and accept that many things cannot be changed. You will be surprised to discover that when you start 'worrying' about your own health, your stress will lighten and your friends and family will also be more relaxed because your stress is less. You'll be ahead of the game and those around you will win also.

Enjoy a break just for you. A large cause of apprehension is the turbulent lifestyle that many citizens own. Each 24 hour period they scramble from here to there, wearily laboring to feed their families, hurrying to obtain their children from their schools so they can get them to their sports routines, racing to their house to feed them dinner, etc. As a result, we forget to take time for ourselves and appreciate the fact that we are alive. So, set an appointment with yourself at least once a week when you will simply sit back and appreciate your life. Take a bubble bath. Read a book. Talk a walk in the park and enjoy the beauty of nature. Just take a time out from your hectic schedule, even if it's for five minutes, and really look around you. Remember that life is beautiful and you will find that your stress simply melts away. Go to gall bladder symptoms in women for smart details.

Externalize your feelings. Many people have a habit of keeping their feelings bottled up, whether it's because they feel it would be a show of weakness to reveal their fears and frustrations or simply because they do not want to upset the people around them. When you do this, you risk having the stress increase because you're not dealing with it. You may want others to like and accept you, but this doesn't mean you have to perform for them all the time and not reveal what you're feeling. There's nothing to be gained by putting on a fake smile and not showing your true feelings, such as when someone does something that bothers or upsets you. A buildup of negative emotions that you pretend don't exist will only lead to even more stress, so accept the fact that you are human and that if the people around you really care about you, they will understand that you need to let off steam.

Don't disregard chronic stress. It doesn't usually go away on it's own. You may be surprised one day to realize that stress has slowly but surely infiltrated your life and your health is now paying the price. For this reason, employing the tips in this article is a good strategy, even if you don't think you suffer from chronic stress.

Considering Real-World Solutions For Losing Weight

You may have a misconception that you HAVE to eat a specific quality of food every day in order to maintain your health and vitality. Curbing your appetite may seem, at first glance, to be counter-productive. The fact is, however, that your appetite is flexible, and you can change it with a little effort. How much you eat each day is set by your habitual eating patterns. This can be adjusted. It's possible to reset your appetite center so you don't want to eat as much - and feel satisfied - by instituting a few techniques into your daily routine.

One important way you can start this is to drink more water. While there are many times you will feel hungry, it could actually be your body needing water instead. Drinks that have a lot of sugar or high in calories are not good to drink instead of water.

It's fine to drink pure fruit juice, but only in moderation, as this too is quite sweet. You should make water your primary beverage for quenching your thirst. You should get in the habit of having water with you at all times. When you are adequately hydrated, your body won't feel as hungry as it once did.

If you're lucky, the closet you've come to a major disaster is watching it on TV. Most of us have experienced severe storms, flooding and fire, however many of us have not experienced a full blown epic disaster first hand, and none of us really want to either. This, though, doesn't mean we shouldn't prepare for the worst.

It's not the disaster that you should be worried about, you should be worried about what happens if you survive!

Radiation, mystery planets, Aliens, economic collapse, solar flares, these are just some of the "doomsday" scenarios making their way around the popular media. Whether you believe in this or not, you have to agree that being prepared is far better than being caught off guard.

Easily improve your chances

The easiest and quickest way to prepare for a disaster is to have survival backpack packed and ready to go, or as the military call it "Bug Out". This is not a new concept, a bag prepared with survival essentials is a time tested way to give yourself an advantage in an unknown situation.

Used by Military and professionals the world over isn't it time you got started creating your own "bug out bag".

Enter the survival backpack

A good backpack should contain:

- Food and Water - Small separate containers to minimise leakage or total loss. Plan on at least 72 hours of supplies.

- Light and Communication - Flashlights and Am/Fm Radio with Batteries, try to get alternative powered devices where possible.

- Survival Sleeping Bags - These double as blankets and shelter, quip based on number of family members.

- Emergency Ponchos - These provide warmth and shelter for your family.

- Tools - Think about adding tools to your kit that re multi purpose.

- Hygiene and Sanitation - Often overlooked but critical. Add things like wipes and hand cleaners

- First Aid - Add basic first aid supplies to your kit

Build or buy

There are two ways to you can get started, buy or build. Experts agree that when you make your own survival bag you'll become more familiar with the contents, however there is nothing wrong with getting a pre made solution. It's a lot easier to get an all in one pack instead of buying each item separately.

Field testing

One of the best ways to discover if you're up to the challenge of "survival" is to go on a camping adventure with just your gear. While not for everyone one this is a really cool thing to do while testing out your stuff. This way you'll know how things work if you really need to use them.

Better than nothing

The main thing in a survival situation is that you can drink, eat, build a fire, take care of any medical emergencies and build a shelter. With a little practice and the right tools you'll have a few less things to be worried about.

Education in the developing world

Universal Primary Education is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals and great improvements have been achieved in the past decade, yet a great deal remains to be done.

Researchers at the Overseas Development Institute indicate the main obstacles to greater funding from donors include: donor priorities, aid architecture, and the lack of evidence and advocacy.

Additionally, Transparency International has identified corruption in the education sector as a major stumbling block to achieving Universal Primary Education in Africa.

Furthermore, demand in the developing world for improved educational access is not as high as one would expect as governments avoid the recurrent costs involved and there is economic pressure on those parents who prefer their children making money in the short term over any long-term benefits of education.

Recent studies on child labor and poverty have suggested that when poor families reach a certain economic threshold where families are able to provide for their basic needs, parents return their children to school. This has been found to be true, once the threshold has been breached, even if the potential economic value of the children's work has increased since their return to school.

But without capacity, there is no development. A study conducted by the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning indicates that stronger capacities in educational planning and management may have an important spill-over effect on the system as a whole.[50] Sustainable capacity development requires complex interventions at the institutional, organizational and individual levels that could be based on some foundational principles:

national leadership and ownership should be the touchstone of any intervention;
strategies must be context relevant and context specific;
they should embrace an integrated set of complementary interventions, though implementation may need to proceed in steps;
partners should commit to a long-term investment in capacity development, while working towards some short-term achievements;
outside intervention should be conditional on an impact assessment of national capacities at various levels.

A lack of good universities, and a low acceptance rate for good universities, is evident in countries with a high population density. In some countries, there are uniform, over structured, inflexible centralized programs from a central agency that regulates all aspects of education.

Due to globalization, increased pressure on students in curricular activities
Removal of a certain percentage of students for improvisation of academics (usually practised in schools, after 10th grade)

India is now developing technologies that will skip land based telephone and internet lines. Instead, India launched EDUSAT, an education satellite that can reach more of the country at a greatly reduced cost. There is also an initiative started by the OLPC foundation, a group out of MIT Media Lab and supported by several major corporations to develop a $100 laptop to deliver educational software. The laptops are widely available as of 2008. The laptops are sold at cost or given away based on donations. These will enable developing countries to give their children a digital education, and help close the digital divide across the world.

In Africa, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) has launched an "e-school program" to provide all 600,000 primary and high schools with computer equipment, learning materials and internet access within 10 years. Private groups, like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are working to give more individuals opportunities to receive education in developing countries through such programs as the Perpetual Education Fund. An International Development Agency project called nabuur.com, started with the support of former American President Bill Clinton, uses the Internet to allow co-operation by individuals on issues of social development.

In Brazil, education is improving (slowly). With the Education Minister Fernando Haddad, certain situations have changed, as the implementation of the New Enem, PROUNI, Fies, ENADE, SISU among other government programs important to the growth of education

Economics and education Or Economics of education

It has been argued that high rates of education are essential for countries to be able to achieve high levels of economic growth.

Empirical analyses tend to support the theoretical prediction that poor countries should grow faster than rich countries because they can adopt cutting edge technologies already tried and tested by rich countries. However, technology transfer requires knowledgeable managers and engineers who are able to operate new machines or production practices borrowed from the leader in order to close the gap through imitation.

Therefore, a country's ability to learn from the leader is a function of its stock of "human capital". Recent study of the determinants of aggregate economic growth have stressed the importance of fundamental economic institutions and the role of cognitive skills.

At the individual level, there is a large literature, generally related back to the work of Jacob Mincer, on how earnings are related to the schooling and other human capital of the individual. This work has motivated a large number of studies, but is also controversial. The chief controversies revolve around how to interpret the impact of schooling.

Economists Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis famously argued in 1976 that there was a fundamental conflict in American schooling between the egalitarian goal of democratic participation and the inequalities implied by the continued profitability of capitalist production on the other.

Educational technology

One of the most substantial uses in education is the use of technology. Also technology is an increasingly influential factor in education. Computers and mobile phones are used in developed countries both to complement established education practices and develop new ways of learning such as online education (a type of distance education). This gives students the opportunity to choose what they are interested in learning. The proliferation of computers also means the increase of programming and blogging. Technology offers powerful learning tools that demand new skills and understandings of students, including Multimedia, and provides new ways to engage students, such as Virtual learning environments. One such tool are virtual manipulatives, which are an "interactive, Web-based visual representation of a dynamic object that presents opportunities for constructing mathematical knowledge" (Moyer, Bolyard, & Spikell, 2002).

In short, virtual manipulatives are dynamic visual/pictorial replicas of physical mathematical manipulatives, which have long been used to demonstrate and teach various mathematical concepts. Virtual manipulatives can be easily accessed on the Internet as stand-alone applets, allowing for easy access and use in a variety of educational settings. Emerging research into the effectiveness of virtual manipulatives as a teaching tool have yielded promising results, suggesting comparable, and in many cases superior overall concept-teaching effectiveness compared to standard teaching methods. Technology is being used more not only in administrative duties in education but also in the instruction of students. The use of technologies such as PowerPoint and interactive whiteboard is capturing the attention of students in the classroom. Technology is also being used in the assessment of students. One example is the Audience Response System (ARS), which allows immediate feedback tests and classroom discussions.
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are a “diverse set of tools and resources used to communicate, create, disseminate, store, and manage information.”[24] These technologies include computers, the Internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and television), and telephony. There is increasing interest in how computers and the Internet can improve education at all levels, in both formal and non-formal settings. Older ICT technologies, such as radio and television, have for over forty years been used for open and distance learning, although print remains the cheapest, most accessible and therefore most dominant delivery mechanism in both developed and developing countries. In addition to classroom application and growth of e-learning opportunities for knowledge attainment, educators involved in student affairs programming have recognized the increasing importance of computer usage with data generation for and about students. Motivation and retention counselors, along with faculty and administrators, can impact the potential academic success of students by provision of technology based experiences in the University setting.

The use of computers and the Internet is in its infancy in developing countries, if these are used at all, due to limited infrastructure and the attendant high costs of access. Usually, various technologies are used in combination rather than as the sole delivery mechanism. For example, the Kothmale Community Radio Internet uses both radio broadcasts and computer and Internet technologies to facilitate the sharing of information and provide educational opportunities in a rural community in Sri Lanka. The Open University of the United Kingdom (UKOU), established in 1969 as the first educational institution in the world wholly dedicated to open and distance learning, still relies heavily on print-based materials supplemented by radio, television and, in recent years, online programming. Similarly, the Indira Gandhi National Open University in India combines the use of print, recorded audio and video, broadcast radio and television, and audio conferencing technologies.

The term "computer-assisted learning" (CAL) has been increasingly used to describe the use of technology in teaching. Classrooms of the 21st century contain interactive white boards, tablets, mp3 players, laptops, etc. Wiki sites are another tool teachers can implement into CAL curriculums for students to understand communication and collaboration efforts of group work through electronic means.[citation needed] Teachers are encouraged to embed these technological devices and services in the curriculum in order to enhance students learning and meet the needs of various types of learners.

Learning modalities, School Girls in Afghanistan

There has been work on learning styles over the last two decades. Dunn and Dunn focused on identifying relevant stimuli that may influence learning and manipulating the school environment, at about the same time as Joseph Renzulli recommended varying teaching strategies. Howard Gardner identified individual talents or aptitudes in his Multiple Intelligences theories

Based on the works of Jung, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Keirsey Temperament Sorter focused on understanding how people's personality affects the way they interact personally, and how this affects the way individuals respond to each other within the learning environment. The work of David Kolb and Anthony Gregorc's Type Delineator follows a similar but more simplified approach.

It is currently fashionable to divide education into different learning "modes". The learning modalities are probably the most common:

Visual: learning based on observation and seeing what is being learned.
Auditory: learning based on listening to instructions/information.
Kinesthetic: learning based on hands-on work and engaging in activities.
Although it is claimed that, depending on their preferred learning modality, different teaching techniques have different levels of effectiveness, recent research has argued "there is no adequate evidence base to justify incorporating learning styles assessments into general educational practice.
A consequence of this theory is that effective teaching should present a variety of teaching methods which cover all three learning modalities so that different students have equal opportunities to learn in a way that is effective for them. Guy Claxton has questioned the extent that learning styles such as VAK are helpful, particularly as they can have a tendency to label children and therefore restrict learning.
Instruction is the facilitation of another's learning. Instructors in primary and secondary institutions are often called teachers, and they direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects like reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. Instructors in post-secondary institutions might be called teachers, instructors, or professors, depending on the type of institution; and they primarily teach only their specific discipline.

Studies from the United States suggest that the quality of teachers is the single most important factor affecting student performance, and that countries which score highly on international tests have multiple policies in place to ensure that the teachers they employ are as effective as possible. With the passing of NCLB in the United States (No Child Left Behind), teachers must be highly qualified.

Systems of higher education

Higher education, also called tertiary, third stage, or post secondary education, is the non compulsory educational level that follows the completion of a school providing a secondary education, such as a high school or secondary school. Tertiary education is normally taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training. Colleges and universities are the main institutions that provide tertiary education. Collectively, these are sometimes known as tertiary institutions. Tertiary education generally results in the receipt of certificates, diplomas, or academic degrees.

Higher education generally involves work towards a degree-level or foundation degree qualification. In most developed countries a high proportion of the population (up to 50%) now enter higher education at some time in their lives. Higher education is therefore very important to national economies, both as a significant industry in its own right, and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy.

Alternative education

Alternative education, also known as non-traditional education or educational alternative, is a broad term that may be used to refer to all forms of education outside of traditional education (for all age groups and levels of education). This may include not only forms of education designed for students with special needs (ranging from teenage pregnancy to intellectual disability), but also forms of education designed for a general audience and employing alternative educational philosophies and methods.

Alternatives of the latter type are often the result of education reform and are rooted in various philosophies that are commonly fundamentally different from those of traditional compulsory education. While some have strong political, scholarly, or philosophical orientations, others are more informal associations of teachers and students dissatisfied with certain aspects of traditional education. These alternatives, which include charter schools, alternative schools, independent schools, homeschooling and auto didacticism vary widely, but often emphasize the value of small class size, close relationships between students and teachers, and a sense of community.

Alternative education may also allow for independent learning and engaging class activities.

Writing for Publication, Plot Holes and How They Can Destroy a Story

As an editor, I find nothing more uncomfortable than having to tell a writer about a flaw in a draft that pertains to a plot hole. And often I'll be asked to define this tear in the fabric of a story that makes a section of the narrative unrealistic for what I refer to as a reader's "acceptability quotient."

Plot Holes Can Crop Up Anywhere

The tendency is to assume a plot deficiency occurs only at the end of the story, and while this indeed does happen, it's often easiest to remedy with a denouement. The problem I've found, however, is that the more elements revealed at the end of the story, the weaker the overall plotline. If I'm reading a couple of pages of plot resolution at the very last of a narrative, I generally suggest that the writer go back and work on these elements so they're brought out and resolved within the framework of the text.

Types of Plot Holes

The most obvious plot hole is anything that requires a deus ex machinato save the day. I always hate when an otherwise good story requires a preternatural event to reconcile a plot element. But plot holes are more insidious than purely contrived events. How do characters make it cross country in a day in an automobile? Or heal from horrific wounds in three days? How does a year pass in a story and the only person who is affected by this is the lead character?

Chronology Is a Factor Never to Lose Site of

Time is a big deal, and it contributes to plot problems as much as anything. When a year passes, everyone it the story is impacted by this. What did they do during that year? Quite commonly, even the best writers can't effectively fill long gaps, and it's a reason I suggest writing tight timelines whenever possible, and especially with mysteries and thrillers.

Inconsistency Creates Plot Holes

Readers don't have to know that characters go to the bathroom, eat every meal, answer each phone call, etc., but if a character has a lisp on page 4, it can't have been cured by the middle of the next page. Mary can't be two months pregnant in June and have a baby that has gone full term by August. Tom can't be fired in December, but working for the same firm in April, without an explanation. A boat that's destroyed in a storm can't reappear in the final scene--with the reader told that the craft really wasn't dashed against the rocks as first reported. Shakespeare could get away with it; the rest of us can't.

Not Finishing Threads Can Cause as Many Problems as Anything

It certainly is easy to take a run at one Pulitzer Winner, INDEPENDENCE DAY, by Richard Ford. But my reason for disliking this book has nothing to do with anything I saw on the review sites or the opinions of people I respect who read the book. My reason was because the thread regarding the murdered realtor, which Mr. Price brought up twice, was never tied up for the reader. In my opinion, it was the only true plot element in the entire story, and it was ignored. (If you haven't read the novel, it has no plot, just the idle ramblings of a neurotic malcontent during a three-day Fourth of July holiday. If you like Virginia Woolf, you'll likely enjoy this; if not, you might want to stay away.) As to my point, I don't see how this open thread ever got by the editors at Knopf.

Major Writers Get Away With Plot Holes, the Rest of the World of Writers Can't

Disregarding my reference to THE TEMPEST, in THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE, how is it that a man as meticulous as Der Needle would leave a door unlocked so his landlady could walk in on him while he was on his radio transmitting to the Germans? This occurring when the entire story was a testament to this assassin's extreme caution with everything he did?

Everyone has plenty of examples of the sort of missteps I just mentioned. Established writers are cut a lot of slack for reasons that boggle the mind of any person working hard to try to make it in this business. But a major requirement, like it or not--for anyone striving to attract a mainstream publisher--is to provide work that is devoid of inconsistencies which create holes in the plot.
